The Forgotten Wisdom

#1 The Master and Disciple
A wise master and his disciple were sailing in a small boat from Morocco to Spain across the Straight of Gibraltar. Along the way they began discussing the nature of life and the mysteries of the Great One. Suddenly, out of nowhere, a wild storm blew across the sea. It was far too wild and dangerous to try to out run it, so they decided to ride it out clinging to the deck. The disciple began to fret as the waves became bigger and bigger.
He then yelled out, “Why has the Great One made me suffer this storm? Why has He done this to me?” The disciple then let go of his hold but was swept into the sea by a large wave, where he drowned.
The wise master, on the other hand, never once asked why he was made to suffer. All he did was pray that the Great One help him through the troubles. Soon after, the storm abated and the wise master sailed on to Spain. Along the way he encountered the bodies of hundreds of his country’s enemies floating in the water. If it hadn’t been for the storm, he and his country would have been attacked and many would have died.
Without asking, he had learnt the reason why.
This parable is first attributed to the Sufis of Persia, 11th-13th Century.
