#22 How To Share Nuts
A wise master was approached by four children on the streets of Babylon, one of whom was carrying a bag of nuts.
“Please, Master,” said one child, “we seek your wise counsel. We are having difficulty sharing these nuts evenly between us. Would you help?”
The master thought about it for a moment, then said, “I can indeed help you. But first I must ask, do you want God’s way of distribution or the human way?”
The children answered at once, “God’s way.”
The master then took two handfuls of nuts from the bag and gave it to one child, then a single handful of nuts to another child, then three nuts to another. To the last child he gave nothing.
The children looked at him, baffled. “This doesn’t seem fair,” said the child who had received none. “What kind of distribution is this?”
The master nodded and said, “This is God’s way. To some he gives plenty, to others little, and to some nothing. If you had asked me to distribute the nuts the human way, I would have given equal amounts to all of you.”
A variation of this parable is attributed to Nasreddin Hodja, the 13th Century spiritual teacher and scholar who lived in Turkey and was famed for his unique and unconventional, yet effective and simple, methods of teaching.
